1. We use the Passive
  • when the action is more important than the person who did it;
This shop was opened in 2010.
  •   when we don't know the person who did the action;
Her phone was stolen two months ago.
  • when the action is a law or rule;
Smoking is not allowed here.
  •   with the word "born".
My sister was born in 2000.
  
2. We don't use the Passive
when the verb doesn't have objects (E.g. arrive, come, grow, happen, wait etc.).
I grew up in this town. (NOT: I was grown up in this town.)
